Original Abstract Art by Joe Eccles

Birmingham Selfridges Mural — The Harmony of Balancing the Chaos - Permanent Installation

In 2024, Joe Eccles was commissioned to create a permanent large-scale mural installation for Selfridges Birmingham Mailbox. The work explored movement and layered abstraction within a public commercial environment.

A man with a beard and tattoo on his arm, wearing a white t-shirt, shorts, slippers, and socks, stands in front of a colorful abstract painting in an art studio. There is a ladder on the right, and various art supplies on a table and in a container in the foreground.

Eccles has worked previously with Selfridges and completed large live painting projects with the community, which were donated to charity. This commission required working alone through the night and at various heights to achieve a composition that is dynamic and works up close and from afar.

An abstract colorful painting with bold brushstrokes in pink, blue, green, yellow, red, black, and white, creating a vibrant and chaotic composition.

The completed artwork is a metaphor for the vibrancy and complexity of life. It is bold and provocative and allows the viewer to go on their own journey as they explore the all-over composition, without a single focal point. Eccles has constructed the piece so that even though there is no safe place for the viewers’ eyes to rest, there is a calm solidarity in the exploration.
